Costa Rica 2005

Monkey Rehab Place

The kids at the Rainbow Lodge mentioned the "Animal Place" that we soon found out was a rehabilitation facility. Of course Robin and I HAD to visit so it was arranged that we did on a day that other tourists would not be there.
(They raise money by charging admission for tours for people from the tour boats.)
It turned out that Earl and Carol are US Ex-Pats who took in a bird and as is so often the case, the rest was history! They have released 3 Toucans, which is almost unheard of and have released the 6 Scarlet Macaws that we saw on the beach. Their cages are open during the day so the birds and mammals are free to leave if and when they are ready. The cages are closed in the evenings to protect against predators.

Robin made a good connection with other Costa Rican rehabilitators and we all had the most enjoyable day ever!

Earl with a young Spider Monkey friend. Spider Monkeys are close to impossible to see in the wild so this was a real treat for us.

Getting ready to swing!
Monkeying around
(mono colorado)
Reid with a young White Faced or Capuchin (mono blanco) friend.
Capuchin and Spider Monkey friends. We ended up calling Reid "Monkey Boy".

Two Capuchins hanging........we think they thought he was Dad.

Earl with very young(Mantled) Howler Monkey (mono congo).

One only sees Howlers in trees. Although they are easier to see than the Spider monkeys, seeing a baby (and getting to touch it) was a real treat.

.

Baby Howler - they need constant contact because they would be on their mother all the time.

My coconut!

Working on a banana.

MY banana. You can see how young the Spider is in this photo.

Another treat (one of many here) was meeting this baby anteater. The only time we have seen anteaters is from a great distance, up a tree.

The blanket is his surrogate mother.

Look at those claws!

When Robin put her hand up he was searching between her fingers for ants.

Hey, I've got a monkey on my back.

My hand got in one of the photos!

Don't let go!

Please don't leave me!
